The Act of Killing is a documentary film by Joshua Oppenheimer which focuses on a turbulent time in Indonesia’s history, where hundreds of Indonesians were killed following an alleged communist coup. The documentary has won several film awards including the 2013 European Film Award for Best Documentary, the Asia Pacific Screen Award and the best documentary at the 2014 BAFTA awards. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2014 Academy Awards. The film is highly controversial and among other criticisms does not set the political context for the film content. Rio will address these issues.
